TOPLINE: The Biden Administration’s open-door immigration policies have created a surge in COVID-positive migrants unlawfully entering the United States. COVID cases are rising in communities along the southern border and spreading to other parts of our country because President Biden and his Democrat allies in Congress refuse to reverse their reckless pro-amnesty policies, which are jeopardizing the health and safety of American citizens.
COVID Cases Are Increasing Because of President Biden’s Border Crisis
If President Biden was serious about combatting the COVID-19 pandemic, he would partner with House Republicans to secure the border.
Unfortunately, the Biden Administration is prioritizing its far-left immigration policies over the safety and security of the American people.
In the first two weeks of July, there was a 900 percent increase in the number of illegal immigrants testing positive for COVID-19 in the Rio Grande Valley Sector, the epicenter of the border crisis.
This is unacceptable.
The United States is currently experiencing the highest level of illegal immigration in over 20 years. This comes directly from President Biden halting the construction of the border wall, reinstating the failed policy of catch-and-release, and removing the United States from the successful “Remain in Mexico” international agreement. Rather than releasing thousands of migrants into our country, President Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy ensured migrants would wait outside the United States for the duration of their immigration proceedings.
The best thing President Biden could do right now is reject any talk of rescinding Title 42 of the Public Health Safety Act, which allows the Department of Homeland Security to immediately expel migrants who were recently in a country with a contagious disease.
At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Trump Administration effectively used Title 42 to prevent migrants from spreading COVID in the United States.
President Biden is reportedly considering ending Title 42 at the end of this month. Doing so would strip our Border Patrol agents of an important legal tool to prevent unvaccinated migrants from spreading COVID-19.
Most illegal immigrants entering the United States hail from Central American countries, where vaccination rates are significantly lower than vaccination rates in the United States. A large increase in unvaccinated migrants at the border could lead to a surge of the delta variant, which is now responsible for about 83 percent of active COVID cases in the United States.
Nearly 30 percent of illegal immigrants being held by Immigration and Customs Enforcement have refused to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
If President Biden does not want to see the COVID-19 pandemic return through the delta variant or the lambda variant, which was first identified in Peru, he would take every precaution to keep migrants from entering the United States. President Biden should not release captured migrants into the country.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists Mexico as a “High” travel warning.
The CDC still requires unvaccinated Americans coming back from Mexico to quarantine for seven days – something that illegal immigrants traveling through Mexico are clearly not doing.
With detained illegal immigrants being shipped to cities all over the country, it puts us at risk for spiking COVID cases.
Captured migrants are often transferred to other government-run facilities throughout the country. However, border officials rarely test captured migrants for the coronavirus at the southern border. Instead, detainees are tested after they are transferred to other locations.
Biden’s Border Crisis is Getting Worse, Not Better
President Biden’s open-border immigration policies are continuing to incentivize tens of thousands of migrants to cross the southern border each month illegally. This is endangering the health of our communities.
- U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) experienced nearly 190,000 enforcement encounters at the southern border in June 2021.
- This is a 471 percent increase compared to June 2020.
- Illegal border crossings in June 2021 mark a new 21-year high.
- March, April, May, and June were all months where CBP encountered over 170,000 migrants attempting to enter the United States unlawfully.
- CBP has seized more fentanyl this year than all of 2020.
CNN reports that the United States “is on track to encounter more than 2 million migrants at the US-Mexico border by the end of the fiscal year,” marking a record high.
The Rio Grande Valley Sector is one of the main locations where migrants attempt to cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally.
Brian Hastings, the Rio Grande Valley Sector’s Chief Patrol Agent, announced that U.S. Border Patrol’s apprehensions surpassed the 1-million milestone in June.
The Rio Grande Valley Sector sees more than 2,000 apprehensions each day and accounts for 60 percent of confirmed positive detainees in U.S. Border Patrol’s custody.
In the first two weeks of July, 135 detainees at the Rio Grande Valley Sector tested positive for COVID-19.
President Biden, and the Democrats who support him, are costing irreparable damage to the cities, farms, ranches, communities, and families all along our southern border and, as a result, the rest of the country.
BOTTOM LINE: Through promises of amnesty and open borders, the Biden Administration has created an out-of-control surge of COVID-positive illegal immigrants at the U.S.-Mexico border. President Biden and Vice President Harris refuse to take responsibility for their actions and acknowledge the reality of the situation at the border. This is not a partisan issue. Migrants with COVID are entering America illegally and spreading it across the country, and the American people are suffering the consequences. Will House Democrats continue supporting these reckless policies, which are creating a massive public health crisis in the United States?
