WASHINGTON, D.C.—House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) released the following statement applauding President Trump’s decision to nominate Louisiana native and President of the Family Research Council, Tony Perkins, to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom:

“Tony Perkins will make an excellent addition to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom. I’ve known and worked with Tony for over 20 years, going back to our time in the Louisiana legislature where we battled for the religious freedoms that are a part of our nation’s founding. I can think of few leaders who have been more effectively engaged in the defense of religious freedom than Tony Perkins. This appointment sends not only a message of hope to the persecuted, but a message that the US is serious about helping people all around the world who seek the same religious freedoms that we enjoy and hold sacred.”
