WASHINGTON, D.C. — Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) released the following statement after the Senate voted to acquit President Trump:

“At last, President Trump has been rightfully acquitted.

“If Speaker Pelosi wanted to make history, she succeeded. She endorsed the first impeachment process that began in search of a crime, rather than on the basis of one. She presided over the first and only entirely partisan impeachment vote in American history. In brazen displays of hypocrisy, her lieutenants, Chairmen Adam Schiff and Jerry Nadler, blocked Republican witnesses in the House, then demanded that Democrat witnesses be called in the Senate. After months of telling the American people they had ‘overwhelming evidence’ of President Trump’s crimes, Democrats begged Senators to help them collect additional evidence. Despite their best efforts, the truth won out. The American people were not convinced. The United States Senate was not convinced.

“Impeachment, as a constitutional tool to address wrongdoing, has been irreparably cheapened by Democrats’ antics and partisanship. Democrats were willing to tear our country apart just to remove President Trump from the Oval Office and the 2020 ballot. This failed impeachment will be Speaker Pelosi’s only legacy. President Trump, on the other hand, will continue to deliver results for American families, unburdened from Democrats’ ridiculous attempt to take him down.

“I was proud to stand with my Republican colleagues against this shameless harassment. I look forward to President Trump’s reelection in November, and our continued cooperation to build a brighter future for America.”
