WASHINGTON, D.C. — Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) released the following statement upon news that Republican Leader Greg Walden of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce will retire at the end of this term:

“I’d like to thank Rep. Walden for his distinguished career in public service. Over the years, our country has benefited enormously from his expertise and dedication to conservative principles. The people of Oregon’s 2nd District have been well served by his pragmatic, principled approach to lawmaking.

“I am lucky to serve with Rep. Walden on the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Under his leadership, we enacted historic, bipartisan legislation to address many issues that affect hard-working families across America, including the opioid epidemic, building out broadband capabilities, and reauthorizing the Federal Communications Commission for the first time in 28 years. I look forward to continuing our work together with Greg through the remainder of this Congress.

“While Rep. Walden is moving on from Congress, he leaves behind many friends. We will miss him. I wish Greg and his wife, Mylene, nothing but the best in the next chapter of his young life.”
