Pandemic Response Report is a weekly newsletter about America’s response to the coronavirus pandemic from Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis (SSOCC) Republicans.

What’s Important

DHS is Violating CDC Guidance at the Border and Republicans are Seeking Answers: Republican Whip and Select Subcommittee Ranking Member Steve Scalise (R-La.) called on Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to provide a plan to address the public health crisis at the border and stem the flow of illegal immigration.

Less Than 50% of Schools Meeting Five Days a Week In-Person: As President Biden approaches his first 100 days in office, less than 50% of schools are meeting in-person five days a week even though top health officials have stated there is no medical reason for schools to be closed.

Democrats Continue to Worsen the Border Health Crisis: Last week, House Democrats passed two immigration measures to loosen immigration restrictions despite the health crisis at the border. They also voted against requiring illegal immigrants who just crossed the border to get a COVID test before being allowed to fly all over the country.

Relief Radar

Democrats Continue to Worsen the Border Health Crisis: Last week, House Democrats passed two immigration measures—the No Ban Act and Access to Counsel Act—to loosen immigration restrictions despite Biden’s Border Crisis, which is also a health crisis at the border. House Democrats are prioritizing the needs of illegal immigrants over the safety and security of the American people. By loosening immigration restrictions in the middle of a global pandemic, Speaker Pelosi and Democrats are signaling to the world that the southern border is open to everyone, despite the risk of spreading COVID-19.

Crisis Corner

Less Than 50% of Schools Meeting 5 Days a Week In-Person: As President Biden approaches his first 100 days in office, less than 50% of schools are meeting in-person even though top health officials, including Dr. Anthony Fauci and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Rochelle Walensky, have stated there is no medical reason for schools to be closed. President Biden pledged to reopen schools in his first 100 days, but he has failed on this key promise to American families.

Democrat Hypocrisy Alert

Whitmer Visits Florida After Telling Others Not to Travel: As Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has locked down residents and issued dire travel warnings, we now know she ignored her own advice and traveled to Florida last month to visit her father. This is yet another example of Democrats telling Americans to “do as I say but not as I do.” Speaker Pelosi was caught without a mask at a hair salon that was under a lockdown order from Governor Newsom. Hours after President Biden signed an executive order mandating masks on federal property, he was spotted without a mask on federal property. And John Kerry, the U.S. special presidential envoy for climate, was spotted without a mask on a flight from Boston to Washington.

Democrats’ COVID Testing Double Standards for Americans and Illegal Immigrants: Last week, Democrats voted against requiring illegal immigrants who just crossed the border to get a COVID test before being allowed to fly all over the country. But at the same time, they make American citizens coming back from Mexico get one.

Biden Blunders

Biden Says Science is Back but Doesn’t Follow Science on Reopening Schools: On Earth Day, President Biden boasted on social media that “science is back.” But if science is back, why hasn’t he delivered on his pledge to reopen schools in 100 days? Less than 50% of schools are teaching students in-person five days a week, even though top health officials have stated there is no medical reason for schools to remain closed.

This Week in SSOCC

DHS is Violating CDC Guidance at the Border and Republicans are Seeking Answers: Republican Whip and Select Subcommittee Ranking Member Steve Scalise called on DHS Secretary Mayorkas to provide a plan to address the public health crisis at the border and stem the flow of illegal immigration.

At a recent Select Subcommittee hearing, Dr. Anthony Fauci testified under oath that President Biden’s housing of migrants in overcrowded facilities is violating CDC guidance regarding social distancing and mask wearing. Additionally, Director of the CDC, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, testified that all travelers from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador should have a negative COVID-19 test prior to entering the U.S. by air. In the letter to Secretary Mayorkas, Scalise calls on DHS to test every migrant for COVID-19 prior to release, ensure migrants wear masks while in federal custody, and provide plans to comply with social distancing and capacity levels in DHS facilities.

What They’re Saying

Scalise accuses Biden administration of ‘exempting’ illegal immigrants from COVID-19 restrictions (Fox News)

“House Republican Whip Steve Scalise on Tuesday wrote to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, accusing the Biden administration of exempting illegal immigrants from COVID-19 restrictions – while citing testimony from Dr. Anthony Fauci to make his case. ‘As a nation we are placing burdensome public health restrictions on American citizens while those who enter our country illegally are permitted to flow into American towns and cities without any such restrictions,’ Scalise, R-La., wrote to Mayorkas. ‘This is jeopardizing the health of Americans and threatens to prolong the COVID-19 pandemic. It appears that the Biden administration is exempting illegal immigrants from the very rules that American citizens are forced to follow.’”

Gavin Newsom can’t guarantee California schools will be open in the fall. Why not? (SF Gate)

“California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Wednesday that he hopes all of California’s schools are open for in-person learning in the fall, but stopped short of a guarantee, stating, ‘Mandates are not as often looked on as favorably as you might think.’ Public health experts now say schools can reopen safely for in-person learning with modifications, and while Newsom has come under fire for past mandates to close businesses and require mask-wearing in public, he expressed reticence to mandate a return to in-person learning.”

Whitmer visited elderly father in Florida during pandemic (AP)

“Gov. Gretchen Whitmer traveled out of state more than a month ago to visit her elderly father, a snowbird who has lived in Florida and has a chronic disease, her office said Monday. The disclosure confirmed reporting by the Lansing-based publication MIRS. It came weeks after the governor warned the public about spring break trips, particularly to Florida, amid a surge in coronavirus cases. Two of her top aides, including Michigan’s health director, vacationed in southern states despite a state recommendation to avoid travel.”
